Asphalt repair fixes the spots where a driveway or parking lot has started to break down. Left alone, a pothole or a broken edge keeps growing. Greenfield Pavement Coatings is based in Clarksville. We repair asphalt for homes and businesses there and across the Nashville area.
For a repair, we mill the failed area out with our own two-foot or four-foot skid steer attachment. Then hot mix asphalt goes in and is compacted flush with the pavement around it. Single cracks get crack sealing instead, which keeps water out of them.
Tell us about the driveway, parking lot or repair and where it is. We look at the job and put the quote in writing.
Clarksville gets more than 50 inches of rain in a normal year, per NOAA climate normals. Federal soil surveys put the city on the Highland Rim. Much of the ground is cherty soil over clay that water passes through slowly. Water that gets under the asphalt sits on that clay and weakens the base.
Winter adds freeze and thaw. NOAA's normals give Clarksville about 78 nights a year at or below freezing. Most of those days climb back above freezing by afternoon. Each cycle works water deeper into open cracks and down toward the base.
Traffic does the rest. Repeated loads over a weak spot crack it into a pattern like alligator skin, called fatigue cracking. A pavement engineering reference says potholes are generally the end result of that cracking. The broken pieces work loose, and the hole opens down to the base.
A patch holds best when its edges sit in solid pavement. The federal patching checklist outlines a square or rectangle at least a foot past the damage. It names a milling machine as one way to cut that outline. On our repairs, a skid steer milling attachment makes that cut.
The milled hole is cleaned out before any mix goes in. Tack coat goes on the straight milled edges so the new asphalt bonds to them. Hot mix goes in against the edges first and is compacted, in layers on a deep patch. The checklist calls for a finish flush with the pavement around it, or slightly above.
Patch work waits for dry weather. The federal checklist says paving does not begin if rain is about to fall. The skid steer attachments handle repair areas and small sections. When a whole parking lot needs asphalt milling, a full-size machine is brought in.
A patch works where the damage sits in spots and the pavement around it is sound. Potholes fit that, and so does one soft spot where the base gave way. Edges can fail where loads run along them with no side support, pavement engineers note. A broken edge gets cut back to solid asphalt and patched.
Raveling is a surface coming apart from the top down as loose stone comes off. Small raveled areas get patched the same way. If the surface is worn all over but the base is solid, an asphalt overlay may fit better. A driveway guide from the asphalt trade says to patch weak spots and holes before an overlay.
Alligator cracking across most of a driveway is a different story. A sealer manufacturer's guide for homeowners calls it spider web cracking and reads it as base failure. With the base failed under most of the drive, a new asphalt driveway is the answer. We tell you which way to go after we look at it.

We come out and look at the asphalt, the base under it and where the water runs. On a parking lot we also look at the traffic pattern and the striping.
The quote comes to you in writing with the work spelled out. Once you say yes, the job goes on the schedule. Weather can move the date, and we tell you when it does.
Failed asphalt is milled out, or the old surface comes up, where the job calls for it. Then the hot mix goes down with our pavers and is rolled while it is hot.
Parking lots get their striping once the asphalt has cured. We tell you how long to keep cars off the new surface. We also tell you when it will be ready for its first sealcoat.
