Crack sealing and asphalt crack filling close the cracks in a driveway or parking lot before water gets in. Water that reaches the base weakens it, and freeze and thaw cycles work the cracks wider. Greenfield Pavement Coatings is an asphalt paving contractor in Clarksville. We seal and fill cracks for homes and businesses across Middle Tennessee and the Nashville area.
Crack sealing usually comes before driveway sealcoating, so the sealer goes down over a closed surface. Most cracks take a flexible sealant or a simpler filler, and how much a crack moves decides which. We look at the cracks first, and the quote comes to you in writing.
Tell us about the driveway, parking lot or repair and where it is. We look at the job and put the quote in writing.
A crack that runs straight across a driveway is usually a cold-weather crack. Asphalt shrinks in low temperatures, and its binder hardens with age. These are working cracks that open and close as the temperature swings, and they get crack sealing.
A crack that runs the length of the drive can mark a weak paving seam. Most of those barely move, so they get crack filling instead. A pavement reference draws the line at half an inch, and narrower, scattered cracks get sealed or filled. Wider cracks in large numbers call for removing the cracked layer and paving over it.
Alligator cracking is a web of connected cracks that looks like a gator's hide. The same reference ties it to a base that can no longer carry the traffic. Those cracks are too many to seal one by one, so the fix is asphalt patching or a new surface.
Sealant sticks best to a clean, dry crack. The federal crack treatment checklist calls for blowing each crack out with compressed air. It also calls for pulling weeds and drying any moisture before sealant goes in.
Routing cuts a clean channel over the crack, down to sound pavement on both sides. The checklist calls for routing working cracks over 1/8 inch wide and generally more than 20 feet apart. In federal road tests, rubberized sealant in routed cracks outlasted the same sealant in unrouted ones.
Cracks under a planned asphalt overlay need more lead time. The checklist says to seal them at least a year before the overlay goes down. The wait heads off bumps and shoving when new asphalt is rolled over the sealant.
Clarksville winters are hard on open cracks. NOAA's climate normals for the city count about 78 nights a year at or below freezing. Most of those freezes thaw out by the next afternoon. Water in a crack freezes overnight and pries the edges a little wider each time.
Much of the ground around Clarksville sits on the Highland Rim, over clay mixed with chert gravel. Federal soil surveys say water moves through it slowly. Water that gets through a crack sits on that clay instead of draining away. A base that stays wet loses support, and that can lead to alligator cracking and potholes.
Crack sealing works best in moderate weather, so spring and fall suit it well here. Cracks sit about halfway open in those months. That way the sealant stretches less in winter and squeezes less in summer. The federal checklist's usual floor is 40 degrees and rising, and sealing waits when rain is on the way.

We come out and look at the asphalt, the base under it and where the water runs. On a parking lot we also look at the traffic pattern and the striping.
The quote comes to you in writing with the work spelled out. Once you say yes, the job goes on the schedule. Weather can move the date, and we tell you when it does.
Failed asphalt is milled out, or the old surface comes up, where the job calls for it. Then the hot mix goes down with our pavers and is rolled while it is hot.
Parking lots get their striping once the asphalt has cured. We tell you how long to keep cars off the new surface. We also tell you when it will be ready for its first sealcoat.
