Skid Steer Milling for Repairs, a Full-Size Mill for Lots

Asphalt milling, also called asphalt grinding, takes the worn top layer off old pavement. Greenfield Pavement Coatings handles asphalt milling for driveways and parking lots around Clarksville and the Nashville area. The cut leaves a rough, grooved surface that new asphalt can grip. On our asphalt repair jobs, the broken area gets milled out first.

We mill repair areas and smaller sections with our own skid steer and its two-foot and four-foot milling attachments. For a whole parking lot, we bring in a full-size milling machine. Milling is one part of our work as an asphalt paving contractor in Clarksville. We look at each job first, then put the quote in writing.

On a pothole or a crumbling edge, the broken asphalt gets milled out before the patch goes in. Our skid steer makes that cut, two feet or four feet wide per pass.

The federal highway agency's patching checklist names a milling machine as one way to cut a patch outline. The outline runs at least a foot past the damage, in a square or a rectangle. The checklist then calls for tack coat on the cut edges before the new asphalt goes in.

NOAA's climate normals give Clarksville about 78 nights a year at or below freezing. Water in a crack freezes and thaws through the winter, and the crack opens wider. By spring, that cracked spot can be a pothole that needs milling out.

Why Mill Before New Asphalt Goes Down?

A university pavement reference calls milling machines the main way to take an old surface off before an overlay. Milling cuts down ruts and bumps instead of burying them under new asphalt. The grooved surface gives the new layer more to grip. That makes milling the usual first step in asphalt resurfacing.

The same reference says milling keeps curb and gutter lines in place before an overlay. On a driveway, our skid steer mills the strip at the garage floor so the overlay meets it flush.

When a whole parking lot needs milling, we bring in a full-size milling machine. It takes the old asphalt off the lot ahead of parking lot paving. That reference also says a milled surface should be swept or washed before paving, or dust weakens the bond.

What Are Asphalt Millings, and Where Do They Go?

Asphalt millings are the ground-up bits of old pavement that come off under the mill. The federal highway agency calls the material reclaimed asphalt pavement, or RAP. Each piece is stone still coated with old asphalt.

A federal highway agency guide estimates that most of it gets reused. Crushed and screened, it goes back into new hot mix asphalt and cold mix. It also serves as base stone under new pavement, or as fill.

How We Work

How a Job With Greenfield Pavement Runs

From the first call or text to the finished work, here is how it goes.

1

Call or text

Call or text (931) 362-7283, or send the quote form. Tell us what the surface is, what is wrong with it and the town it is in.

2

We look at the job

We come out and look at the asphalt, the base under it and where the water runs. On a parking lot we also look at the traffic pattern and the striping.

3

Your written quote

The quote comes to you in writing with the work spelled out. Once you say yes, the job goes on the schedule. Weather can move the date, and we tell you when it does.

4

Milling and tear-out

Failed asphalt is milled out, or the old surface comes up, where the job calls for it. Then the hot mix goes down with our pavers and is rolled while it is hot.

5

The finished surface

Parking lots get their striping once the asphalt has cured. We tell you how long to keep cars off the new surface. We also tell you when it will be ready for its first sealcoat.

FAQ

Asphalt Milling Questions, Answered

Common questions about asphalt milling around Clarksville and the Nashville area. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (931) 362-7283

Is asphalt grinding the same as asphalt milling?
Yes. A university pavement reference says milling is also called grinding or cold planing. A drum lined with cutting teeth grinds a layer off the old asphalt. Whichever word a quote uses, it is the same work.
Can you mill just part of a driveway or a parking lot?
Yes. Our two-foot and four-foot skid steer attachments mill repair areas and smaller sections. A few broken spots in a lot can come out without touching the rest. When the whole lot needs milling, we bring in a full-size milling machine.
Does milling fix a failed base?
Milling takes off the surface, and a failed base sits below it. Alligator cracking often points to a base that has given out. That spot needs a full-depth patch or a replacement. Around Clarksville, water that gets through cracks sits on a slow-draining clay subsoil, per NRCS soil surveys.
How deep does asphalt milling go?
It depends on the job. On a patch, federal patching guidance takes the cut down to firm support. Before an overlay, the cut makes room for the new layer at the curbs. Your written quote spells out the work.
Where do you do asphalt milling?
We are based in Clarksville and work about 75 miles around it, across Middle Tennessee. Most of the work runs south and east, toward Nashville, Hendersonville, Franklin and Murfreesboro. The full list is on our service areas page.
How much does asphalt milling cost?
The price depends on the size of the area and how deep the cut has to go. It also depends on whether our skid steer can do it or the full-size machine has to come in. The patch or new asphalt that follows is part of the price too. Call or text (931) 362-7283, and we look at the job and put the quote in writing.
